54 runners. 54 Islands - one cause. #54Strong
Whether you saw it on the news or heard your friends discussing it over lunch, you would have been aware of the dynamism Hurricane Irma, and less than two weeks later Hurricane Maria, had on the 54 islands of the British Virgin Islands. The 54 Islands of the BVI have experienced the impact of the most powerful category 5 Atlantic hurricane in history, causing devastating and disastrous damage to the wrecked islands fragile infrastructure.
54Strong acknowledges that for the 30,000+ residents, the road to recovery will be a long and painful path, but are willing to endure their suffering in order to raise funds for those in need in the British Virgin Islands. The charity aims to bring together 54 runners, with either historical or current ties to the BVI, to participate in the Miami Marathon (or half marathon). The Miami Marathon, taking place on the 28th January 2018, will be a way to raise awareness and money for the BVI to therefore help the 54 islands on their path to recovery.
Martin Cooke, who will be participating in the Miami Marathon on behalf of 54Strong, explains:
"I am fortunate that the BVI has provided me with over 12 wonderful years of fantastic memories, experiences and great lifelong friendships but that the 54 Islands of the BVI will need help getting back on their feet and by entering the Miami Marathon on the 28th January 2018 with others with similar memories to myself, I hope that I can provide a small contribution to help the BVI re-build, in order for others to then have the same life changing experiences that I've been blessed with"
All funds raised will be donated to Richard Branson's Virgin Fund, therefore 100% of the proceeds will go to the BVI recovery effort.
